COMMON PHRASES IN ITALIAN

  • Sì – this is one of the easiest Italian phrases. It simply says “yes”
  • No – this is a simple phrase used frequently. Its English translation is “no”
  • Per favore – it is a simple phrase that you will find useful in many instances when making a polite request. Its English translation is “please”
  • Non capisco – this a phrase you will need to say when you mean “I don’t understand”
  • Mi scusi – is used when you want to say “I am sorry” or “Excuse me”
  • Parla inglese? – You might find yourself in situations where you do not how to say or explain something in Italian and need to talk English but have no idea the other person knows English. The translation is “do you speak English?”
  • Quanto costa? – it is a phrase used when you need to know the cost. Its English translation is “how much is it”?
  • Come si chiama? – it is a phrase you most likely need to use. The translation is “what is your name?”
  • Mi chiamo…. Means “my name is……” you can put your name at the end of the phrase.
  • Dov’è il bagno? Means “where’s the bathroom?”
  • Lei di dov’è? This phrase is a question simply asking “where are you from?”

ITALIAN PHRASES FOR EMERGENCY

You may find yourself needing some help or assistance. Although no one wishes another person harm, it is important to arm yourself with these phrases in Italian since they might come in handy.

  • Ho bisogno di un dottore is a phrase that means “I need a doctor”
  • Attento! Say this phrase to mean “look out”
  • Aiuto! Meaning “Help!” Is a phrase that you might find yourself in need of saying.

ROMANTIC AND CHARMING PHRASES IN ITALIAN

  • Ci vediamo dopo this phrase means “see you later”

Telling the times of the day will be important since those phrases will be important in Italian sentences. Italians use the 24-hour clock but also understand the 12-hour clock. Some of the common Italian phrases involving the time of day include:

  • Di mattina, the translation is “in the morning”
  • Di pomeriggio, is a phrase whose translation is “in the afternoon”
  • Mezzogiorno means “noon”
  • Domani is an Italian phrase for “tomorrow”
  • Ieri is a basic Italian phrase for “yesterday”
  • Oggi is an Italian phrase used for “today”
  • Di sera means “in the evening”

GREETING IN ITALIAN

Greetings are very important to the Italians. It is therefore wise to learn a few phrases that involve greetings. You will need to greet people you and especially if you intend to have a conversation with them. 

  • Buongiorno is a common phrase for “Good morning”. Italians use it as a formal greeting.
  • Buonasera is a common phrase for “Good evening” in Italian. It is a formal greeting.
  • Ciao is a basic phrase that is mostly used, in English, it means “Hi / Bye” It is mostly an informal greeting.
  • Arrivederci is basic Italian phrase for “Good-bye”. It is mostly used in a formal way and setting.
  • Buona giornata means “Have a good day” in Italian.
