Today we will be learning about Spanish series on Netflix. Watching series is a fantastic way to improve your language level and if you are studying Spanish, it turns out Netflix can be considered one of your preferred libraries!
So, let’s see a list of the best TV series to learn Spanish.
LA CASA DE PAPEL (KNOWN IN ENGLISH AS MONEY HEIST)
La casa de papel action takes place in Madrid, through the eyes of an unreliable narrator, at the Royal Mint of Spain (hence the Spanish title, as money is, as we should know by now, made of a special type of processed paper).
The main character, a man known as the “Professor” creates a team with eight people, who go by city names.
The plan?
Breaking into the above-mentioned Royal Mint of Spain, and getting away with €984 million.
They have 67 hostages and engage with law enforcement as a plan to stay in for over 10 days in order to print the money unfolds.
A second heist will be happening later on: the team will add some members and target the gold from the Bank of Spain.
The show was originally released by Antena 3 in 2017. Its global streaming rights were acquired by Netflix in late 2017.
It is starred by Úrsula Coberó (the unreliable narrator), Álvaro Morte (The Professor), and a very long cast.
The series was originally intended to be a far more limited production, but it ended up becoming a global phenomenon, worth a documentary shown after the episodes run (as you know, Netflix tends to binge-play its productions).
AQUÍ NO HAY QUIEN VIVA
Another of the best Spanish series, the exhilarating Aquí no hay quien viva (English: No One Could Live Here) debuted in 2003 also on the Antena 3 network.
The show revolves around the inhabitants of the fictional building at Desengaño 21 in central Madrid. Desengaño translates as “disappointment, disenchantment”, so the viewer could think it is an address made up for comedic purposes.
It turns out, the address does actually exist.
Its success is mostly due to its fascinating characters, clever scripts, and ability to poke fun at many archetypes found in Spanish society and current events.
The show was later rerun by the same network, by cable/satellite channels Neox and Paramount Comedy, and thanks to Antena 3 Internacional, it is quite well-known in Latin America.
It became one of the Spanish tv shows broadcast by Netflix in 2021, long after its cancellation in Spain (it lasted 5 seasons).
The cast, which is also considerably long, is distributed on the building’s floors.
LAS CHICAS DEL CABLE (CABLE GIRLS)
A Netflix original released in 2017, Las chicas del cable series tells the stories of how four young women changed their lives when they start working for a telecommunications company in Madrid which started operations in 1928.

- The most experienced switchboard operator at the company is Ángeles Vidal (Maggie Civantos), who needs to provide for her family.
- Carlota Senillosa (Ana Fernández) represents the will to break free from the general social conventions and his controlling father’s influence.
- Marga Suarez (Nadia de Santiago) wants to turn a page in her life.
As the show progresses, the four women become closer and share their sentimental and personal experiences.
It also focuses on the hard-working conditions Spanish women had to deal with in 1920s Spain. And, it may have somewhat changed, but there is still much work to do.

The title character, played by comedian Brays Efe, is a leading talent agent in the 90s from her agency, PS Management.
Times have changed; Paquita, apparently, not so much. Thus, creating comedic situations as she struggles to find new clients and keep those already with her while reinventing herself alongside Magüi, her faithful assistant.
Also, Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi created the show.
Web platform Flooxer first broadcast it in July 2016. Its success came as a surprise to everyone; therefore, the series’ first season would go on to be aired on the television channel Neox and then on Netflix, which acquired the series in October 2017 and renewed the show for seasons 2 and 3.
And no worries, season 4 will be available in the future.
