tips to learn Spanish

So, you want to learn Spanish? Great! Simply expressing a desire to learn the language is the first step! The following tips to learn Spanish fluently will help you take the next steps.

How to learn Spanish fluently

  • DON’T BE SHY, JUST TRY!

The first step to becoming adept at Spanish is to be willing to converse with Spanish-speaking people. This is probably one of the most important tips to learning Spanish fluently. You do not have to be fluent to have a conversation and the more you speak, the more fluent you will become. Don’t focus on being perfect at first; simply try and speak Spanish that can be understood.

Once you feel more comfortable with speaking Spanish (however basic), try and speak it as much as possible, even if only to yourself! This sounds crazy but making yourself think in Spanish can be highly beneficial and will force you to look up and learn words and phrases you do not know. Every time you come across a Spanish-speaking person, don’t be shy and try to start a conversation with them. If you feel foolish, remember that trying to speak a foreign language is a sign of bravery and you will be admired – not laughed at – for it. Of course, if you have the means to go to a Spanish-speaking country for a while, more the better, but this is not necessary to achieve fluency.

  • CREATE A PHRASEBOOK

It is only natural to sometimes forget what you have learnt a few days ago. This is why a Spanish phrasebook is essential. Forget about buying a pre-printed one but get a blank notebook and fill it with words and phrases that are useful to YOU. As you read and speak in Spanish, look up anything you come across that you don’t know and write it in your book. You can even pre-empt this by looking up words and phrases you already use on a regular basis in conversation. You will be amazed at how quickly you can learn by having a relevant, tailor-made phrasebook!

  • LISTEN TO SPANISH AUDIO BOOKS, PODCASTS AND RADIO

Another great way to really learn as much Spanish as you can is to listen to Spanish audio books, podcasts and radio. With the internet today making podcasts and audio books very accessible to anyone, you should be able to download some good quality (or even free) ones without too much difficulty. And if you like listening to the radio, here you can find a list of Spanish radio stations. Listening to Spanish helps to give structure to your learning and will ultimately help you to speak the language with more fluency, the more you listen to it.

  • LOOK FOR A STUDY PARTNER

Learning a new language takes a lot of dedication and time. It can be difficult to force yourself to learn something new every day, so studying Spanish with a study partner is a great idea because it can make you accountable to them. Having a language buddy is also useful since it makes learning so much more fun and you can also practice your new-found skills together!

  • FIND A MEET-UP GROUP IN YOUR AREA

Even if you live in an English-speaking country where Spanish is not often spoken, there should still be plenty of opportunities to practice. These days, there are many Spanish meet-up groups for those learning the language and, depending on your city, it is very likely that you will be able to find a group that meets on a regular basis to practice Spanish.
